[BSPIxCryptoBase Joint Project No. 7]Think about the world beyond the penetration of CBDC and stablecoin into the world.

Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), a digital currency issued by the central bank that has been discussed since the early days of virtual currencies, has been conceived in Japan since 2016, led by the Bank of Japan, and has been undergoing demonstration tests and is entering pilot experiments this year. Various developments toward the introduction of CBDC by governments around the world are also making headlines on a daily basis.
The Japanese yen, a legal tender issued by the Bank of Japan and a coin issued by the Ministry of Finance, which has the power of enforcement under Japanese domestic law, is now being transformed into a digital currency through a variety of demonstration experiments. Also, many operators are planning to offer stablecoin services based on blockchain technology in the form of currency pegs and algorithms, despite the high hurdles that Japan’s domestic law has set for such services. In Japan, where there are numerous payment systems with all the bells and whistles, CBDC and stave coins are not particularly necessary for users, and vendors are likely to have a mixture of interest in and fear of digital currencies and stable coins.

In contrast, when we look at the payment situation in other countries, we hear that there are many unbanked people, there are not as many payment methods as in Japan, and the currencies in those countries are weak and suffering from inflation. The Latin American country of El Salvador has a large number of payment instruments. The Latin American country of El Salvador shocked the world two years ago when it legalized Bitcoin as a legal tender and actually used it. Following El Salvador, the neighboring countries of Guatemala and the Central African Republic are also moving to make Bitcoin a legal tender.

In this project, we will introduce Mr. Miyazawa of Solamitsu Corporation, who has been providing technical support for the CBDC system called “Bakong” in Cambodia, where it is already in use, and the representative of Progmat Corporation, who has been a key member of the digital currency team at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation for several years, and who issues and operates stable coins. Mr. Saito is the representative of Progmat, a company that issues and operates stable coins and has been a key member of the digital currency team at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation for several years. We would like to think together about what the world will be like when CBDC and stable coins become commonplace, and what kind of world it will be like when they are deployed.

If you are interested, we would be very happy if you could join us.
